Martin Murray Foundation where words fail, music speaks.

The Foundation intends to raise funds for those in the West facing a cancer diagnosis, as well as to encourage and support young people in Galway to explore the rich benefits and camaraderie to be found in coming together to learn music.
About Us

Martin Murray Story

2024 saw the sad passing of a wonderfully talented musician from Galway, Martin Murray.

Martin started his career as a young lad in Galway with the Patrician Boys Brass Band & the Galway Youth Orchestra before joining St Patricks Brass Band and also playing with a number of local jazz bands around town – The Moonlight Jazz Band and Black Magic Big Band amongst others. His talent took him professional, and he joined Royal Caribbean Cruises in 2017, travelling the world and working his way up to becoming Musical Director of the then largest cruise ship in the world.

Regrettably in 2023 Martin was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, passing away in June 2024. He was only 34 years old.

Where Words Fail
Music Speaks

Martin's music and life touched the hearts of so many, and through the Martin Murray Foundation, his legacy continues to bring hope. This Foundation embodies his belief that ‘where words fail, music speaks,’ offering comfort and support to those affected by cancer. Our family is very moved by the efforts of so many of Martin friends and fellow musicians to give so generously of their time and talents to honour his memory in this way.

Michael Murray, Martins Brother

Martin’s love for big band music brought joy to so many, and now his Foundation continues that legacy by using music to comfort those facing the hardest battles. Martin’s passion for big band music was more than just a love of sound—it was a love of life, rhythm, and bringing people together. The Martin Murray Foundation carries that same spirit, supporting cancer patients while ensuring his musical legacy continues to inspire. A truly beautiful way to honour him.

Ken o'Connor, Committee Member

Marty's music had a way of lifting spirits, just like the big band legends he admired. Now, his foundation is doing the same—bringing hope where it’s needed most. Through vital fundraising, scholarships and so on, the Martin Murray Foundation is keeping his dream alive and changing lives in the process.

Madeline Flemming, Singer and Friend

Martin was not only an exceptional musician, but also an exceptional person.

His sensitivity and selfless nature shone through in every single performance, as he played within his section in various groups and orchestras.

He consistently supported his fellow musicians, ensuring that the music was always truly special. It was his passion, music was his life.

As a Musical Director, his passion for music was evident, always deeply aware of his colleagues, and always striving to bring out the very best in people.
Musicians wanted to play their best and give their all for Martin, he fostered their confidence in his gentle and approachable way.

This was particularly clear when Martin organized a concert to raise funds for Cancer Care West.
His sole aim was to raise funds and generate as much support as possible for the cause while providing attendees with an unforgettable night of music. Despite experiencing huge pain and discomfort at the time, he diligently rehearsed us, prepared us, and poured his heart and energy into shaping the music for that evening—a night that will forever be cherished by all who attended. The night was everything he hoped, wished, dreamed and planned for.

He often stated that the event was not about him; it was about creating a meaningful legacy through substantial donations for the cause. However, the concert touched everyone present, including those of us in the band.
We were in awe of his strength, determination, professionalism, and dedication to making the night truly special.

I felt an immense pride for my friend "Mur" that night, and I will always carry that pride with me. He was in a league of his own, different class, and it is wonderful to know that his legacy of supporting organizations in need will continue through the foundation established. Martin took huge pride and comfort in knowing this.

As Martin said, "Here's to life"—a poignant piece that was performed that night and reflected his ethos throughout his illness.

Thanks for the memories “Mur
